Vision Board Tarot
Vision Board Tarot
In October 2025, while working at the Sacred Owl and Salt Room, I came up with a class in using
Tarot Cards as vision boards,so that the artist could embody the Card itself as an inspiration for
the year ahead. I did these as examples, and the class takes place over 10 Saturdays, taking a different card as
inspiration, with materials we provide at the shop, most of which are mine. These are different ways of Vision Boarding
using the Tarot.
I learned a lot about myself and about the teaching of this class by doing it.
This process was deeply satisfying to me as an artist, but I failed to connect well with potential students (we rarely
got anyone to participate, and I will explain below.)
As an artist, having to think about yourself as embodying a card for a vision of 2026 was a wonderful process—-as I had
to honor the card itself, include elements of the card in the painting, but also think about what I wanted through the lens of
that card, and come up with a way to present MY version of the card as an inspirational poster, of sorts. This allowed me
so much creative freedom and joy in making these. I didn’t have to worry about commercialization of the image. It doesn’t
have to be part of a tarot deck for everyone—it just needed to inspire ME. How freeing! How fun!
I wanted to help others find that freedom and fun through the soul-searching depths of this process, but I did not account for
a) where people felt confident in their art-making process, and b) what a vision board was in the minds of the average person.
We think (me and the folks at the shop where I offer the course) that folks LOVED my art, but wondered if the class was
going to teach them how to make THAT art, or make THAT poster? Or exactly how they were going to move towards making
a poster of their own when b) most people think of a vision board as a collage project, not a painting. A vision board has words
and inspirational phrases + collage pieces. We had those available—we had LOTS of art supplies—but I was not using them.
I used my own mediums (and I offered them watercolors too). So my examples looked VERY far from what I thought they might
do. If I wanted to sell a class of vision boarding, perhaps I should have done more collage on the vision board for the example. So that folks
could know WHAT THEY were building. Instead, my art—which was supposed to represent just one person’s idea of their vision board—
became a barrier to helping them visualize their own versions. We had one day where three people came—out of 6 classes. I think it was fun
for them that day. Once folks got in the room, with all the craft supplies, it was fun.
Next time I will put up multiple examples of what folks can do—or offer the class in conjunction with an art group or art class. So that I
either allow folks to Visualize their own Vision Board possibilities through multiple examples, OR teach it in a way as an advanced art
exercise for those who are already comfortable making art, or in an educational setting.
I’ve also seen others create a workshop that allows everyone to choose a card that best represents the Year ahead for them, and
then that allows a lot more freedom in WHICH card an artist is examining and re-interpreting. That would be fun too!
The class would have eventually included the following tarot cards:
The Fool
The Magician
The HIgh Priestess
Death
The Star
The Sun
The Devil
King and Queen of Wands
King and Queen of Cups
King and Queen of Swords
King and Queen of Pentacles
For me, I will probably do more of the cards here—-but not sure how much farther I would go. I will continue doing as many
of the cards as I feel inspired to do as Vision Boards. I don’t think they would work as a commercial deck, because the images
are so personal. They work as a painting series, though. I may eventually work through the whole Major Arcana and the Kings and Queens.
Embodying the different Major Arcana images has been very transformational for me so far. And I would suggest EVERY artist do this.
I have appreciated what I’ve learned by embodying the cards.
Below, you’ll find MY vision boards through the cards.
